Intravenous infusion is a commonly used medication method in clinical treatment, and infusion sets are essential infusion instruments in intravenous infusion therapy. So, what is an infusion set, what are the common types of infusion sets, and how should infusion sets be used and selected correctly?
1: What is an infusion set?
Infusion set is a common medical device and disposable medical product, which is sterilized and used to establish a channel between veins and medication for intravenous infusion. It is generally composed of eight parts connected, including intravenous needles or injection needles, needle caps, infusion hoses, liquid filters, flow rate regulators, drip pots, cork puncturers, air filters, etc. Some infusion sets also have injection parts, dosing ports, etc
2:What are the common types of infusion sets?
With the development of the medical industry, infusion sets have evolved from ordinary disposable infusion sets to various types such as precision filtration infusion sets, non PVC material infusion sets, flow rate setting fine adjustment infusion sets, hanging bottle infusion sets (bag infusion sets), burette infusion sets, and light avoiding infusion sets. Below are several common types of infusion sets.
Common disposable infusion sets and precision filtration infusion sets
Common disposable infusion sets are one of the most widely used medical consumables, which are inexpensive and widely used. The material used is a fiber filter membrane. The disadvantage is that the pore size is large, the filtration efficiency is low, and the fiber filter membrane will fall off and form insoluble particles when encountering acid or alkaline drugs, which may enter the patient's body, leading to capillary blockage and infusion reactions. Therefore, when using strong acid and strong alkaline drugs in clinical practice, ordinary infusion sets should be avoided as much as possible.
Precision filtration infusion set is an infusion set that can filter particles with a diameter of 5 μ m and smaller. It has the advantages of high filtration accuracy, no foreign object shedding, etc. It can effectively filter particles, reduce local irritation, and prevent the occurrence of phlebitis. The selected filter membrane has dual layer filtration media, regular filter pores, and low drug adsorption properties. Suitable for children, elderly patients, cancer patients, cardiovascular disease patients, critically ill patients, and patients who require intravenous infusion for a long time.

Micro adjustment infusion set, also known as disposable micro setting micro adjustment infusion set, is a specially designed infusion set for adjusting the flow rate of medication. Using a regulator to control precise flow rate, fully utilizing the effectiveness of the medication, and reducing adverse reactions to the human body caused by excessive infusion.
The burette infusion set consists of a bottle stopper puncture device protective sleeve, a bottle stopper puncture device, injection parts, a graduated burette, a shut-off valve, a dropper, a liquid medicine filter, an air filter, a pipeline, a flow regulator, and other optional components. Suitable for pediatric infusion and occasions that require precise control of infusion dosage.

Hanging bottle and bag infusion sets are used for intravenous infusion of medication in patients who require high-dose dispensing, with the main purpose of liquid separation infusion. Specifications and models: 100ml, 150ml, 200ml, 250ml, 300ml, 350ml, 400ml.
The light avoiding infusion set is made of medical light avoiding materials. Due to the unique chemical structure of some drugs in clinical practice, during the infusion process, they are affected by light, leading to discoloration, precipitation, reduced efficacy, and even the production of toxic substances, posing a threat to human health. Therefore, these drugs need to be protected from light during the input process and use light resistant infusion sets.
3. How to use infusion sets correctly?
(1) Before use, the packaging should be checked for damage and the protective sheath should not fall off, otherwise it is not allowed to be used.
(2) Turn off the flow regulator, remove the sheath of the puncture device, insert the puncture device into the infusion bottle, open the intake cover (or insert the intake needle).
(3) Hang the infusion bottle upside down and squeeze the drip bucket with your hand until the medication enters about half of the drip bucket.
(4) Release the flow regulator, place the medication filter horizontally, exhaust the air, and then proceed with infusion.
(5) Before use, tighten the infusion needle connector to prevent leakage.
(6) The infusion operation should be carried out and supervised by professional nursing personnel.
